Yoast SEO AI — I go to work in the office on Tuesdays and coincidentally, it’s on Tuesdays that Yoast SEO sends out its email newsletters. Every time I read these newsletters on the way home from the office.
Last time they talked about User-agent: GPTbot (Dissalow: / of course), and also announced an update to their plugin and promised to add AI to it. I read about it, thought it was interesting and immediately forgot about it. But today a new newsletter arrived and it contained news about updating the plugin and adding AI functions to it.
For money yes
I’ll immediately make a reservation that the AI function is available only to owners of Premium, i.e., the paid version of the plugin. Well, since I happen to be like this, let’s try what kind of AI is there.
It’s strange, but lately, for unknown reasons, I began to delve deeper into SEO. And now I’m already making, so to speak, situational publications. Usually, I never tried to catch the hype by publishing on the day of the event. This time I also think there won’t be any hype, but I’m still writing about it.
Does it work with Cyrillic?
Spoiler — yes!
The first thing that came to my mind after the thought that I should try this AI as part of Yoast SEO was that it would not work with Cyrillic, but then I immediately remembered that I now have a cropped version of the site in English, which is exactly what I need develop. That is, the test must take place no matter what.
Installation and activation
Next, I think I need to update the plugin, I go to the admin panel and go to plugins, and everything is empty there, no hints about the need for an update or anything like that. A minute later I remember that I have a multisite and go to the multisite plugins section. Hurray, there is a suggestion to upgrade to version 21.0. Updated.
Well, I think that’s it, now we will generate the title and description, by the way, this is all AI, this is what Yoast SEO itself writes:
Yoast SEO Premium 21.0 comes with AI! You can now generate titles and meta descriptions with help from generative AI. Our AI reads your content, understands it, and creates accurate, engaging titles and descriptions. Find out more about what’s new in Yoast SEO Premium 21.0 in our release post!
Yoast SEO Developer blog
For me personally, this is even very relevant, primarily for old records, because a couple of years ago I put something on top of all this that wouldn’t even fit into the mouth of a tiger shark.
Then again, you can say run to the first publication that comes across in which there is no description and there is no AI, there is no button that was shown in the screenshot in the announcement. Okay, I think, I go to the English site, also to a publication without description and there is no button there. I smoke, I go to read the announcement more carefully and find there a mention that the AI function must still be activated in the settings after updating the planin. No more words, here it is (beta), first from the right:
Using Yoast SEO AI
If you’ve read this far and haven’t blacklisted my site, that’s a success. After all the suffering with updates and activations of the plugin, the coveted AI button finally appeared in the Yoast SEO interface, here it is:
I take a screenshot directly as part of this recording (almost a live broadcast), it’s time to click and understand what’s going on with the Cyrillic alphabet. Cry!
And again asking to agree with something, I’m already tired. I tick the box, agree, click!
Yoast SEO AI title generation
And finally, magic happens, which these days won’t surprise anyone. The plugin suggests a title based on the text of the publication. It’s nice that it also adds variables. It is possible that the presence of variables during AI generation is influenced by the fact that they are present before generation. In terms of quality, I chose an option from the top five. Either I’m already tired or he’s just fine.
This is what it looks like:
No matter what, the result works.
Yoast SEO AI description generation
Well, not bad, not bad, but what about the description? And there everything is exactly the same, but specifically in my case there were no variables and the first five options were with a fair amount of nonsense. I clicked generate more options, the plugin thought and first generated a timeout error (beta zhezh). And then I clicked again and it gave me options that I could choose from.
Here is the screen with the last five options where I selected:
We can say that the experiment was a success, and I wrote the biggest post in the history of my blog (I think there are more, but I didn’t write them).
Conclusion and conclusions
To write that artificial intelligence is penetrating deeper and deeper into our lives, I think, would be the height of banality. In general, any conclusions will be banal because nothing special, of course, has happened now.
But I will repeat what I am sure many have already formulated and written, namely — there is no point in running around the Internet and jumping from site to site in order to keep up with the topic of AI. I’m sure many have seen enough of social media. networks with the next selection of neural networks will definitely go check how it really works. AI will come on its own and will come to where people are already working and to those familiar programs in which everyone is already sitting.
I’ve already gotten into Photoshop, and I think Figma too, but what next? Ableton, WhatsApp, YouTube, VK and so on…
What about AI specifically in Yoast SEO? In the first test, I was not able to feel the potential resource savings and process acceleration. Even considering that I don’t particularly like writing and don’t know how. But I’m sure this is just the beginning. Here is a button for AI generation of titles and descriptions for all entries in the background, give me two. And no one yet said that we should stop only at the title and description (hehe).
Thank you for your attention!
